Written by Banchi

Imagine you’re an everyday person who is doing your job. You have a family you support with your income.

Your job is not your profession of choice but it brings in the food on the table.

You and your significant other are raising your children.

Life is ok and you’re thankful that you are not poor and that you do not lack the basic necessities.

Suddenly, imagine being transported 50 years ago. You find yourself surrounded by odd-looking people.

You’re absolutely bewildered at what you are seeing. No tall skyscrapers, no glistering apartment buildings, no speeding cars, no television advertising boards.

You try to look around confused. You are not familiar with these unfamiliar surroundings.

Suddenly you feel awfully dizzy and find yourself stumbling on the ground.

Someone grasps your arm and asks you.

“Are you okay?”

You tell this person who is wearing an outfit that consists of coats, waistcoats and trousers of which you have not seen before except on TV that you are lost and looking for your family.

He looks at you and what you are wearing bizarrely.

You brush aside his staring and explain to this person that you need help.

He nods and tells you to follow him.

You have no choice but to do so.

You did not ask where he is taking you, you assumed he is taking you to the police station where you can file a report.

All at once, the two of you begin having discussion about your time and his time.

You learn that he is married and has 4 children. You tell him that you are also married and has 2 children.

He then tells you in explicit detail about the lives of his four children like school tests they were taking last week or a score of a particular subject by one child or a silly fight the whole family had the other day or what they ate for dinner two days ago.

While he is rambling on all these details, you have stopped walking in shock.

You do not remember what you have talked about with your family yesterday let alone a week ago.

He sees you just standing there and comes back to ask you:

Him: What is wrong?

You: How do you know all these detailed things about your four children?

Him: WE TALK.

If you are a parent, stop whatever you are doing and listen to your child and be there.

If you are having family dinner (whether you are a sister, a brother, a father or a mother), leave your mobile before you sit down to have dinner and be there.

If you are a friend and having conversations with your friends, let yourself be there for your friends by not checking your phone or watching the TV.

Remember —–

Years ago, before the invention of the internet and mobile phone, families share a lot at meal times.

Those times are precious times we must regain again.
