Think of something you intended to do but ended up doing something else. Maybe you intended to speak calmly to your partner. Instead, you ended up throwing verbal punches. Maybe you intended to build a serious relationship with someone. Instead, you ended up going to late-night parties every night. Conjure up in your mind that big failure of self-control. Perhaps you’re in the middle of it now.
Losing self-control happens to all of us.
Most of the time, there’s a gap between what we intend to do and what we end up doing. Who can resist short-term satiations? They’re irresistible. Our immediate desires want their fair share. Because we cannot resist their attraction, lack of self-control creeps upon us. It knocks us to the ground. What we have intended to do is crushed to the ground and we are left wimping.
Fighting these short-term satiations is a daily battle for most of us.
