The German-born Buddhist nun, Ayya Khema, has a solution to the happiness problem.
Imagine an experience that made you happy. Maybe it’s the first time you had fallen in love. Happiness curled your toes when the object of your desire walked into a room and you caught your breath at the sight of him. Your legs faltered, and you had to reach out for a nearby wall to hold you steady.
Or maybe delight swam in your entire body when an ocean breeze ruffled your hair. Or that unforgettable moment your boss surprised you with a promotion. Or maybe looking at your bank balance made you halt your walk when it showed you thousands of dollars from your side-business. Or maybe your mind is conjuring up that goofy smile on your face when you bought your car or your nice house. Or maybe you’re reminiscing about an intimate moment when your lover’s hand gently massaged your scalp when you were down.
All these experiences have made you happy.
