Who you are as a person is more important than what you do or what is on your resume.
“He saved my son’s life,” the guy was telling the crowd at the funeral ceremony. His eyes were glassy and wet. People from all over the world were present to say goodbye to a man they respected. There were shareholders of the company the man who died led. There were executives, managers, and instructors like me. And his close family was sitting at the front.
Of all these people in the crowd, a simple gardener who works in the company’s headquarters was speaking words from the heart.
“He saved my child. That is who he was,” he told the crowd with a trembling voice.
I knew the man who died as my boss’s boss. He was the CEO of the Institute I work for. He was well educated and had traveled a lot. Horses can gallop as they please in his home. It is that big. I have seen the beauty of his mansion in one of the company’s annual gatherings.
But none of the people who knew this man remember what he had. We remember who he was. His resume was impressive. But his heart was another thing. It was pure gold.
