Picture this scenario:
A teacher is giving you a lesson on a NEW language that you have been dying to learn.
You want to speak this new language.
Hence, the NEED for this language class.
After many sessions of this language class—–
The teacher gives an assignment for the next day on:
“Bring me the ONE THING that can make you speak this NEW language you are learning. The student who gives me that special one thing that is a guarantee for speaking your new language will get an A.”
As soon as the students in the class heard this, they start talking to each other and you raise your hand:
You: “In what form are we going to bring this assignment? On a paper? Or Orally?”
Teacher: “That depends on what you have come up with as an answer.”
———-
The whole day, you think on the assignment. You write down on a notepad what you have learned from your teacher on the NEW language.
You look at what you have come up on your pad.
- Saying Hello in the new language.
- Counting numbers in the new language.
- Saying goodbye in the new language.
- Reading the alphabets in the new language.
There are the things that you came up with.
And you cannot come up with one singular answer.
And you ask yourself:
“Which ONE THING could bring the highest result in speaking the NEW language?”
You are not able to choose.
————-
The next day—-
The teacher asks everyone for the assignment.
You deliver yours with reluctance.
The teacher starts looking through every paper he has received.
You see him reading intently on each paper.
You try to read his expression.
You cannot.
———–
After some time —–
He looks up from all those papers that are displayed on his desk and looks at his students.
And you get the feeling that he is NOT happy at all.
And you get the shock of your life when you hear him say:
“No one gets an ‘A’ today.”
Lots and lots of murmurings pass through the classroom.
You cannot stay silent.
You raise your hand and speak:
You: “But why? I have answered SPEAKING THE LANGUAGE as the one thing that helps in learning the new language.”
Teacher: “Yes. You have written details on how speaking the language is essential to learning the language. I like what you have written on your paper.”
You: “But?”
Teacher: “But, you have NOT given me the ONE THING that I am looking for.”
You do not have an answer to that.
You are more confused now.
Through all the noise in your head, you almost missed your teacher speaking to the class:
“I will give all of you another chance, Think more on the assignment. And you will show me what you come up with tomorrow.”
The whole day, you leave all other things and try to work your brain in a new way.
- You go to a library and search for all books related to learning NEW language.
- You Google on that ONE THING that brings the highest result in learning a new language.
————
At the end of the day, what you come up with an answer is the same as it was yesterday.
Speaking the NEW language is the common denominator in many of your findings that help in learning any NEW language.
So, what could the teacher want then? You ask yourself.
Coming up with no viable answer, you could not even get a good sleep through the night.
———
The next day —-
You deliver your paper on how speaking up on the NEW language is the best way to learn that language. You have explained on your paper that speaking up on what you have learned is the only way to improve.
After looking through all the NEW PAPERS that were given to him, your teacher said:
“No one has given me what I am looking for.”
Guess who gets an ‘A’ in your class?
NO ONE.
All the students in the class raise their hand and ask the teacher on what the correct answer is.
Your teacher answered:
“You have given me a paper on how talking in the NEW language helps in learning the language. But NO ONE has stood up here today and talked a single statement in the NEW language.
All of you have written a paper on how speaking up few words in the NEW language is important for learning the language. But NO ONE has stood up today and spoken few words or a single statement to any of us here in the NEW language.
All of you get an ‘A’ on theory basis. BUT, on practical basis all of you get an ‘F’
I was looking for one person who – instead of giving me a paper on what is the correct way of learning a NEW language, COULD STAND UP HERE TODAY AND SAY FEW words in the NEW language.”
———
The LESSON here is to take ACTION.
You want to learn a new thing?
Start doing SOMETHING that improves that new thing.
You want to learn a new language?
Start speaking the few words that you have learned THAT DAY.
You want to change a certain habit?
Start doing something that will take you in the direction of the new habit that you want.
One-at-a-time.
Action breeds confidence.
Progress comes through action.
A little bit progress on a daily basis gives anyone confidence. Progress is what makes us take another step.
Progress is highly motivational!
Any kind of progress (A big one or a tiny one) is achieved through ACTION.
That is how you get an ‘A’ in REAL LIFE!
