“The minute you accept your current standards is the moment you’re on the path to irrelevance. Heroes are masters of “satisfied discontent” Robin Sharma
I have a friend who always improves himself by taking short courses throughout the year.
He has a great job. He is brilliant and seems to know all of the answers.
And yet, I just found out yesterday that he is taking courses on positive living and conflict resolutions at night times.
Mind you, my friend is already a great trainer at the company I work for and he also works at the City’s biggest university – as a trainer.
When I asked him why he keeps on taking courses, his answer was:
“Because I need to improve myself always.
Just because I am good at my job today does not mean that I can’t be great at it tomorrow.”
True improvement involves daily action. An action that we take to improve our skills, our talents, our attitude, ourselves and our craft.
“Just because something works doesn’t mean it can’t be improved.” Shuri, Black Panther
I’ve seen over and over in the past how easy it is for people to walk away from any kind of improvement in their personal or work life.
They will get a degree and they have stopped reading after that. They have got a job and they do not improve their skill because they say ‘Why bother? I’ve already got the job.’ They enter into a relationship they’ve been waiting for all their lives and after some time, they stop taking care of the relationship. They assume incorrectly that it will be fine on its own.
There is always room for improvement. Always.
“Doing the same workout every day won’t make you stronger or faster. Just showing up to work every day and doing your job won’t make you better at your job.” Benjamin Hardy
When you first started something out, you have given it your best shot. You did everything to be good at that thing. Be it your job, your education, your relationship or your hobby.
At those initial stages, you were willing to do practically anything:
· To get the job.
· To finish education.
· To get the girl/the boy.
· To get the promotion.
· To get the family you’ve always wanted.
· To get earnings from your side business.
·To write your greatest piece.
· To reach your goal.
You learned and improved on a daily basis, until you got those things. You wanted it really bad.
After you got them, something happens ——
After some time passes you forgot your dedication on improving yourself – in every way.
Do you know how I know that?
Ask yourself:
· When was the last time you were more open to new experiences?
· Do you still read like you used to read when you were in college?
· Do you still approach your relationship with your romantic partner with the same amount of dedication as you did when you started?
·Do you constantly improve your skills?
· Do you thrive everyday to be better than you were the day before?
·Have you stopped looking for the horizon because you’ve already achieved the goal you’ve set for yourself?
· Have you stopped learning?
It’s extremely easy to fall into this trap.
It’s easy to fall into patterns where you stop truly investing in yourself and in a bigger future.
Life gets busy.
You’ve got to do your job, take care of your family and do all the stuff.
It is exhausting.
But you did learn and invest in yourself before. When you were starting. Life was busy before and somehow, you found the time to be the best partner to your loved one, to be the best skillful person in your job, to be the best student among your classmates.
You found all sorts of creative energy to invest in yourself.
So, be honest with yourself.
It is not because life is busy that you’ve stopped improving and learning.
It’s because we’ve just gotten too busy with other things.
Our mind is just somewhere else.
We’ve gotten lazy.
We assume, now that we have what we want that, it is enough.
It’s very easy to drift.
Only when we are required or forced to do something about the thing we are not improving that we wake up from our sleep.
Like:
· An exam.
· A warning from a boss.
· A relationship that is on the verge of collapsing.
· Some close friends are beating you in life.
· A divorce.
· An illness.
·A colleague taking our position.
“If you don’t pay attention to your life on a daily basis, it will absolutely drift in a direction you may not like.” Benjamin Hardy
You have to always keep on learning. Keep on improving.
If you’re not improving on a daily basis, then you will lose what you’ve already learned in the past. Your life will be a stagnant one.
It is like being on a boat on an ocean without sailing. You will be taken away by the wind or the ocean itself.
You’re not improving if you’re not reading daily.
You’re not improving if you’re not developing your skills daily.
You’re not improving if you’re not learning from yesterday’s mistakes.
You’re not improving if you’re not better than you were yesterday.
You’re not improving if you’re not pouring time into your self-improvement – on a daily basis.
You’re not improving if you do not make your daily improvements your priority.
Do Not ever underestimate the power of learning. Just like your body is getting daily nourishment from you, feed your mind and soul. Daily.
Take every day as an opportunity to get better.
Do not be like those people who are simply doing the same thing over and over again.
“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
